Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries store energy in liquid electrolyte solutions containing vanadium ions. Power and energy are decoupled β power depends on stack size, energy depends on electrolyte volume.
VRFBs use vanadium ions in different oxidation states to store chemical energy. During charge/discharge, two electrolyte tanks (positive and negative) circulate through a cell stack separated by a proton exchange membrane. The vanadium ions change oxidation states, storing or releasing electrons.
